While hypocrites can always appeal to elitism (it’s hard at the top, different for me) and human weakness (yes I know I’m doing the wrong thing but my point still stands), you really have to stretch your imagination and bend your concepts of reality to put trust in such people, and the ideals they stand for, once their deception has been uncloaked.
And when hypocrisy is a common theme among those espousing a certain view or approach, it really should make you wonder about the foundations of their arguments, no?…
